Director of Programs

We’re looking for a dynamic, seasoned leader with deep management experience, expertise in the field of international education and exchange, and a passion for bringing the US and Asia closer together to help us grow Princeton in Asia’s programs and amplify our impact.

Princeton in Asia (PiA) believes in the power of person-to-person diplomacy and strives to shape a world where individuals share a mutual appreciation and respect for our planet’s diversity of cultures and perspectives. Since 1898, we’ve placed over 3,400 people in immersive fellowships and internships in 32 different countries throughout Asia. The cross-cultural understanding developed through these posts actively and effectively builds bridges between the U.S. and Asia.

PiA’s programs are grounded in our core Fellow values of transformation, immersion, relationship building, humility, mutuality and interdependence, and contributing to the community. As we steadily relaunch in-person programming following a pause due to COVID, we seek to maximize the immersive experience for Fellows and interns; diversify our portfolio of posts to achieve greater balance across geographies (East Asia, Southeast Asia, Central and Inner Asia and South Asia) and issue areas (arts and culture, education, economic development, environmental sustainability, public health, sports, STEM, and peace, justice and access to information); strengthen training and health and safety support systems for all participants; increase financial accessibility; and broaden our recruiting outreach across a wider list of private and public colleges across the United States, including Minority Serving Institutions. 

OVERVIEW

As our Director of Programs, you will lead the development, implementation, and improvement of PiA’s three programs: the core fellowship program for recent graduates, the Carriebright fellowship for recent alumni, and summer internships for Princeton undergraduates.

Working closely with the Executive Director and Director of Advancement, you’ll be part of a management team that leads the implementation of our long-term strategic plan. You will lead and collaborate with a team of talented Program Directors to implement all program activities with an eye towards diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and excellence, while supporting your team’s growth and development through coaching, mentorship, and performance management. You will cultivate PiA’s network of Country Advisors across Asia and work board committees to develop plans, policy, and processes to support the institutionalization of PiA’s programs. You will bring an eye for appreciation and fresh perspective to the work, identifying areas for improvement and developing systems and processes to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and impact.

On a given day, you could be checking in on our Fellow at a sake brewery in rural Japan, meeting with Country Advisors in Sri Lanka, planning health and safety training in partnership with expert providers, developing curriculum for Fellow enrichment and professional development, connecting with a university partner to discuss outreach activities, interviewing outstanding candidates for the fellowship, or workshopping program improvements with your teammates. BENEFITS

We love the people the PiA mission attracts, so we like to spend some days together in the office, though we also value flexibility and respect personal workstyles. This is a hybrid position with 2-3 days a week based in our Princeton, NJ office and others remote in your home office. We offer a competitive compensation package with a salary in the range of $80-100K and benefits that include a 401(k) plan, premium-free health and dental insurance, paid time off (three weeks of vacation, sick days upon request, 10 holidays, two personal days) and an annual wellness stipend.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Here’s a closer look at the ways you’ll shape PiA’s impact:

  • Ensure the quality and success of all programs in alignment with PiA’s mission, strategy, and values
  • Achieve and maintain programmatic excellence, implement systems for program evaluation and continually improve all aspects of program processes
  • Ensure all aspects of program processes contribute to a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible PiA
  • Manage regional and country programs, including host organization relationships and Fellows posted to those regions
  • Develop, strengthen, and manage host organization partnership portfolio in alignment with geographic and issue area targets
  • Manage and implement Country Advisor network
  • Lead, coach, develop and retain a high-performing Program Team
  • Serve as chief liaison to third-party providers tasked with meeting PiA’s Duty of Care commitments to Fellows and interns
  • Support institutional responses to crises, including medical evacuations, disciplinary issues, physical and mental health problems, political unrest, and natural disasters
  • Collaborate with Program; Health, Safety and Welfare; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees of the Board of Trustees

QUALIFICATIONS

Here’s what we are hoping you’ll bring to the team:

  • Excellent project and team management skills, organization, ability to bring structure and focus to complex programs
  • At least 10 years of experience managing high-quality programs and leading high-performing teams
  • Deep knowledge and experience in the field of international education and exchange, including at least 7 years of experience in the field
  • Demonstrated track record of success in coaching, mentoring, and developing team members to achieve organizational objectives and professional growth
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, with the ability to craft eloquent, effective, and appropriate correspondence quickly and in high-stakes environments
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders domestically and internationally, including executives, academic leaders, advisors, and Trustees
  • Highest standards of judgment, integrity, and professionalism and sense of accountability and work ethic
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and development in diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the field of international education and exchange
  • 5-7 years of experience living and working in Asia, and/or experience working with Asian organizations
  • Availability to work some evenings and early mornings, to facilitate work with stakeholders in Asia
  • Availability to travel internationally 1-2 times per year for 2-3 weeks; ability to travel domestically 3-4 times per year for shorter lengths of time
  • Ability to work for any employer in the United States
