​The Association of VA Surgeons is pleased to announce the AVAS Resident Research Scholarship.  This is a one-year award available to general surgical or surgical subspecialty residents with a faculty mentor who has at least a 3/8ths VA appointment.  Research proposals in clinical outcomes, health services research, education research, basic science or translational research will be considered.  The award is for $25,000 for one year.

Note: The grant only allows for direct costs and a letter from your institution must be provided agreeing to this.

Application Instructions

The application will consist of one pdf file, assembled by the applicant, with the following items in order with each item starting on a new page:

  • Project summary (400 word limit) signed by the applicant
  • Research plan (5 page limit)
  • Bibliography
  • Facilities and resources (1 page limit)
  • Proposed budget (1 page limit)
  • NIH-style biosketch of applicant
  • NIH-style biosketch(es) for mentor(s)
  • Letter of support from primary mentor
  • Letters of support from any additional mentors (if any)
  • Letter of support from department chair
  • Dean/Fiscal Officer Approval Letter
